Trimble Juno SD Handheld Launched, What’s New?

On September 14, 2010, in TRIMBLE, by Eric Edmonds

Let’s first review.  The Trimble Juno Series Handhelds (Juno SB, Juno SC, and Juno SD) are pocketsized, lightweight, durable, field computing devices with integrated GPS technology.  Users achieve 2 to 5 meter positioning accuracy in real time (SBAS) or 1 to 3 meters postprocessed.  The handhelds have Bluetooth wireless technology and LAN technology, a 533 MHz processor, a built-in 3 Megapixel digital camera to take your next Facebook picture, 128MBs of onboard memory with a  MicroSD/SDHC storage slot with up to 8 GB of storage, a 3.5 inch display, all day battery life, and Windows Mobile operating system.  So how are they different?

The Juno SB Handheld contains the Windows 6.1 Mobile Classic operating system but does not provide a modem for wireless data communication.  An outside modem must be used in addition to the handheld.  In addition, the handheld operates on Windows Mobile 6.1 Classic...read more.

The Juno SC Handheld provides a 3.5G broadband cellular modem for wireless data communications.  An outside modem does not need to be purchased and connected to the handheld but a seperate cellular phone must be used to make calls and texts to and from the office…read more.

What differentiates the Juno SD?  The Juno SD Handheld adds voice call and SMS capability and is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system…read more from Trimble.  You can simply connect to the cellular network.

“So that’s it?”  Well, if you think about it, the added functionality provides users with an enterprise ruggedized mobile device and eliminates the the need to carry a separate mobile phone.  As a data collector, you only have to be responsible for losing one device, not four.  As a Field Crew Chief, less time is spent waiting on different devices to connect.  And as a manager, less time is spent solving connection issues amongst devices.  Also, money is saved because you no longer need to purchase mobile phones for your field staff.  Knock Knock…who’s there?  The Future of Efficient Products.

So I use my cell phone a lot when I’m in the field… what will using it do to the battery life of the Juno SD?  The Juno SD handheld standby time is approximately 104 hours with the cellular voice-call functionality enabled, and 136 hours with the functionality disabled.  The Juno SD handheld talk time is approximately (8) hours in GSM mode, and three hours in WCDMA mode.

Here is a great excerpt from Trimble’s press release:  “Using the data transmission capabilities of the Juno SD handheld, mobile, workers can access information in the field such as work orders, map data, reference files, emails, and Internet resources without making a trip to the office”…click here to read more and view the press release.

It would be great if they would put one of these out with the Android software on it. Have you see any plans for that?
