Hoping History Doesn’t Repeat Itself

Now that the Tennessee Titans have reached the 9-0 mark, it’s only natural to dream of playoff match-ups, home field advantage, and maybe even contending in the biggest game of all. Success tends to breed an atmosphere of invincibility, and its sister: arrogance. As fallen humans, we tend not to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors. The result being that the worst mistakes of our past come in cycles: wars, depressions, and yes, NFL music videos. It’s these prospects that beg for someone to take a stand against ideas that seemed good at the time to the current culture, but in the end resulted in disgust, derision and shame from future generations.

Today I am going to stand in the gap for my team (the Titans), my children (and yours), and future generations. I propose that no matter what the level of success that the Tennessee Titans achieve: Super Bowl champions, and dare to dream, the perfect season with that grand trophy, in no way will this team be allowed to produce a “Super Bowl Shuffle” team video.

I know that most societies feel like they know their history and do not need to look it square in face. Regarding any team music/dance videos, you must look it in the face and see it for what it is: a loss of all societal restraint. Debasement of the lowest order. Three hundred pound white lineman dancing, defensive backs swaying to the beat. No one is spared in the degradation. Those that believe they have rhythm convince themselves that they can rap, play air bass and guitar without regard to the consequences of their actions.

I have compiled a list of the three worst music videos in hopes of inspiring others in a call to action. Stop it before it’s too late. I must caution you if you decide to watch these. The debasement of humanity, the degradation of the human spirit, the loss of our humanity is evidenced. These videos are like a horrific car wreck. You shouldn’t look. You don’t want to look, but something in our nature compels us to look.

The first video is of my childhood team, the Los Angeles Rams. It’s called Ram It. It’s quite possibly the worst video of all time.

Next we have the 1986 Oakland Raider’s: Silver and Black Attack.

And the standard that all team videos will be measured against for all time:

The Chicago Bears: The Super Bowl Shuffle

It’s interesting how fate crushes one, elevates another. The Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher spent the entire 18-1 year on injured reserve. He helped Bear’s defensive coach Buddy Ryan in his duties long before his Oiler/Titan debut. His injury not only spared Fisher the humiliation of participating in the video, but it served to hone his coaching skills after his playing days were done.

You’ve been warned.
