Kentucky HS Student wins regional Google contest

On May 22, 2008, in Uncategorized, by Eric Edmonds

Google has been soliciting artwork for its homepage through its Doodle 4 Google competition. The competition ended with winners selected from among 16,000 entrants from across the US. Lynn Camp High School senior Cherry Rose was selected as 1st place regional winner, among a six state region, and the best among Kentucky High School students for her design of the Google logo, called Lend A Hand.

Her theme is “What if you needed a helping hand? There are people all over the world who could use your help. They are injured, starving, suffering, and sick. What if we took action? Imagine yourself in their situation. Wouldn’t you want a helping hand? What if we all lent a hand?”

As a Regional Winner, Cherry is invited, along with a parent, to attend the Regional Winner’s celebration at the Googleplex near Stanford University in Mountain View, CA on May 21, 2008. The celebration will be a fun day of activities where Google will announce the four National Finalists and the National Winner whose design will be displayed on Google’s homepage.

Congratulations, Cherry.

Getting G into IS

On May 21, 2008, in Uncategorized, by Eric Edmonds

Kim McDonough, GIS Coordinator, Information Technology Division, of Tennessee DOT, and a long-time active member of the GIS community in the state, wrote a great article for ESRI ArcNews about Managing GIS within the infrastructure of the IT/IS department. Kim explains the importance of GIS working within the confines of the IT organization.

The computers and systems we use for GIS are exactly the same as those for all other applications in the agency and across the state. We store all our geospatial elements in the exact same database environment as all our inventory features. We have too many similarities to standard information technology to be considered outside of that management scope now. The growth has occurred for myself and other GIS professionals in learning and implementing the operational standards of a large IT department. We are held to a higher standard now in developing and managing our program. Every project must be introduced and adopted into the Information Systems Plan (ISP) before work can begin. Most of these projects will also require a rigorous cost-benefit analysis (also known as return on investment).

I’ve worked in IT for most of my career too and Kim’s comments ring true as GIS is becoming more mainstream, even in smaller jurisdictions. Even if you don’t have an official IT department or existing operational standards for your GIS to reside in, it still makes sense to take a look at the bigger IT picture as an organization moves forward tackling the ever changing world of technology. You will begin to see more buy in from other internal organizations, less duplication of effort and data, and significant cost savings.

More features of Trimble GeoXH 2008

On May 20, 2008, in GPS, TRIMBLE, by Eric Edmonds

The GeoXH 2008 is one of most feature packed professional GPS units available today. We showed yesterday that it can provide accuracy down to decimeter level while using the Zephyr antenna kit. Here are some other things that are pretty nifty.

High resolution VGA screen

  • 3.5 inch VGA (480 x 640 pixel) display
  • For crisp and clear viewing of maps and data

Wireless connectivity

  • Wireless LAN (802.11b/g)
  • Bluetooth
    • Cell phones for Internet connection to get VRS corrections for real-time high accuracy and/or background data
    • GeoBeacon receiver for cable free corrections
    • Laser-rangefinders and barcode scanners

Ruggedized

  • Integrated stylus so it can’t be dropped or misplaced
  • Slip-resistant grip, shock, and vibration resistant
  • Integrated Li-ion battery good for a full day’s work in the field

Windows Mobile version 6 operating system

All in all, this is a powerful unit.  For more info, contact GEO-Jobe at 615-883-0085.

The new Trimble® GeoXH® 2008 is here! Whether you need to collect high-accuracy GIS data, quickly locate hidden or buried infrastructure, or view existing GIS data in the field, the GeoXH 2008 handheld provides the perfect solution. The GeoXH™ now provides real-time subfoot (30 cm) and decimeter (10 cm/4 inch) accuracy, making it the ideal device for any mapping application where on-the-spot positioning is crucial.

In addition, all handheld models in the GeoExplorer 2008 series run the Windows Mobile® version 6 operating system, have high resolution VGA screens, and provide the connectivity and storage options required by GIS professionals and utility workers in the field.

Richard Duncan, co-owner of GEO-Jobe, has this to say about the new GeoXH 2008:

Wow! The 2008 series GeoXH has a real time accuracy of less than a foot. This means now you can have 3 times the real time accuracy of the 2005 series, a serious improvement. Even better news is when using the zephyr antenna kit you get 4 inches of real time accuracy (10 times better real time accuracy than the 2005 series). What amazes me is Trimble is only asking $400 more per unit than the 2005 series. Basically, the new GeoXH 2008 series has the capabilities of the ProXRT/Nomad solution minus the GNSS (Russian Satellite) capability. There is one catch you need access to a basestation via cell phone for the real time accuracy. This is not a problem with GEO-Jobe’s $50/month introductory basestation service.

Give us a call to learn more or to trade-up your existing Trimble unit. Great trade-in pricing is available. 615-883-0085.
