Don’t put Home in your GPS

I read recently that thieves are looking for cars with GPS units not so much to steal the GPS device, but to see if your address is listed in the “Home” saved location. Most GPS devices have a “Home” option where you can store and easily retrieve your home address without having to retype it every time. I guess the hoodlums figure if they find it far enough away from your home, then you’re away from home too, making it all the better reason to visit. Kill two birds with one stone.
So here’s a solution. instead of adding your address to Home, add it to favorites with a random name, but that still points you to your home. Then for HOME you could put the address of your local police station.

I doubt thieves are interested in driving hundreds of miles to go to your house.
Besides, most GPS devices has password protection built in. Enable it !
Yes i agree. However, there are lots of commuters traveling less than 30 miles using GPS because its cool even though they know the route. Lots of soccer moms traveling to games in neighboring communities. GPS devices are just sitting in the dash. And most don’t read the directions to know that security is an option. i found that out by driving through neighborhoods looking for free WiFi when out of town on business (oops, was I supposed to mention that).
I am going to have to agree with you on that one. Nobody reads instructions anymore.. I know people who still dial phone numbers manually into their cell phone because they do not know how to save a number and use the phone book built into the phone.
